Nature lovers will get an opportunity to walk in the Satpura Maikal Range – the landscape connecting Kanha and Pench national parks of Madhya Pradesh – in the fourth edition of seven-day programme starting November 7.
The 78-km trek, jointly organised by the state forest department and World Wildlife Fund-India, will require participants to walk 8-10 kms per day between Kanha and Pench tiger reserves.
The corridor not only facilitates the dispersal of tigers between the two reserves but also is home to several wildlife species and indigenous communities.
“This walk is organised for people to realise that there is nature and wildlife beyond safaris and national parks. Connecting the parks is also a significant factor for the long-term survival of species,” says Soumen Dey, team leader, Satpura Maikal Landscape programme.
Dey said they try and appreciate the contribution of communities and villagers who face hardships because of the migration of animals from one park to other.
“But strangely, they do not retaliate. They live and co-exist peacefully which allows for dispersion,” he said.
The organisers don’t provide luxury of a safari or resort. Participants are lodged in government schools and tents and are served plain vegetarian food.
“So, there’s a lot for one who wants to have the feel of nature,” Dey said.
