Depp, Salman and more: 13 celebs who were accused of physical violence

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has been handed a restraining order after his wife, Amber Heard, appeared in court with a black eye and accused the Oscar-nominated star of assaulting her. From Salman Khan to Rajesh Khanna and Chris Brown, we look at a few other cases.

Hollywood star Johnny Depp has been handed a restraining order after his wife, Amber Heard, appeared in court with a black eye and accused the Oscar-nominated star of assaulting her. Depp and Heard met on the sets of The Rum Diary (2011), when Depp was still in a relationship with French actress Vanessa Paradis, mother of his son Jack and daughter Lily-Rose. They married in a small, private ceremony in Los Angeles in February 2015.

This, however, is not the first time celebrities have lifted the shroud off their troubled marriages (and relationships). We look at a few other cases.

1. Salman and his girlfriends

Salman Khan, the erstwhile Bollywood brat, has a bad record when it comes to relationships. Many of his former partners – from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Katrina Kaif – have reportedly suffered physical abuse at his hands. When Salman was dating actor Somy Ali in the 90s, he once reportedly smashed a bottle of cola on her head in a fit of rage. Aishwarya admitted in an interview that Salman had hit her while they were going out. In 2001, her family filed a complaint about Salman coming to their house drunk and breaking window panes and furniture. He allegedly slapped Katrina Kaif on the sets of Yuvraaj in 2008, after he saw a newspaper photograph of her posing with Akshay Kumar at an IPL match. Sources said he slapped her earlier at a coffee shop too.

2. Karisma Kapoor–Sunjay Kapoor

Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor filed a case of dowry harassment against industrialist Sunjay Kapoor in February this year. What followed was a bitter battle for divorce and their children’s custody.

3. Dimple Kapadia–Rajesh Khanna

Dimple Kapadia married superstar Rajesh Khann in 1973, just three months before Bobby – her debut film – was released. Dimple left Rajesh’s house with their two daughters in April 1982. She later said in an interview: “The life and happiness in our house came to an end the day I and Rajesh got married.” Rajesh used to allegedly beat Dimple up, and burn her with cigarettes.

4. Zeennat Aman–Sanjay Khan

Sanjay Khan and Zeenat Aman met on the sets of a film in 1980 and started dating. It was later reported that Khan assaulted Zeenat in full public view in the lobby of a Mumbai hotel.

5. Chris Brown–Rihanna

Chris Brown was convicted of assaulting popstar Rihanna after a pre-Grammy’s party in 2009. However, they got back together in early 2013.

6. Leander Paes–Rhea Pillai

In June 2014, model Rhea Pillai filed a domestic violence case against Leander – with whom she was in a live-in relationship. It was also said that Leander’s father, Vece Paes, prevented Pillai and her daughter from entering their Carter Road residence. The two are still fighting for the custody of their daughter.

7. Rishi Kapoor–Neetu Singh

Back in 1997, there were reports that Neetu called up a police station one night, telling them that her husband – Rishi Kapoor – assaulted her under the influence of alcohol. But when police reached their house, the couple denied making any such call. That, however, was enough to set the rumour mills running on the turmoil in their marriage. Rishi was even quoted as saying, “Which marriage doesn’t have ups and downs?”

8. Rahul Mahajan–Dimpy Ganguly

Reality TV star Rahul Mahajan already had a history of abuse, with reports stating that he would beat his former wife Shweta. Dimpy, who married Mahajan on reality show Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, later alleged that he assaulted and threatened her with a gun. Dimpy claimed that Mahajan punched and kicked her after she refused to show him an SMS she received on her phone. However, she later went back to him.

9. Yukta Mookhey–Prince Tulli

Former actor Yukta Mookhey filed for divorce in 2013, alleging that her husband – Prince Tuli – abused her physically and emotionally.

10. Adnan Sami–Sabah Galadari

Singer Adnan Sami had to divorce his wife, Sabah Galadari, after she filed a case under the Domestic Violence Act. Incidentally, this was the second time Sami married and divorced Sabah within the span of a decade.

11. Rati Agnihotri–Anil Virmani

Rati Agnihotri, known for films such as Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981) and Coolie (1983), recently filed a complaint against her husband of 29 years, Anil Virmani, accusing him of harassing and torturing her.

12. Om Puri–Nandita Puri

Their marriage is 20 years old now, but several problems seem to have marred their marital life over the last few years. Nandita filed a police complaint against Om Puri a few years ago, accusing him of hurling brass and bamboo artefacts at her. She said that he even pushed her against a wall, and threatened to kill her. The case is still in court.

13. Raja Chaudhary–Shweta Tiwari

The couple shared a tumultuous relationship for the longest time before getting divorced in 2007, when Shweta filed a domestic violence case against Raja. In 2011, the TV actor filed another domestic violence complaint against Raja when he barged into her house and assaulted her and a friend.
