Masti to Kya Kool Hain Hum: Why India loves vulgar films

For every Masaan or Titli that limps its way to even touch five-digit figures on the ticket windows, there is a Masti or Humshakals that ‘break records’ and earn hundreds of crores. For every purist who scoffs at the kind of pointless films Bollywood offers in the name of adult comedy, there will be ten others who’d say January 2016 couldn’t have been any better for them. After all, in just one more week, we have another ‘adult comedy’ ready for release: Sunny Leone’s Mastizaade.

Actor Tusshar Kapoor, who stars in the third sequel of his sister Ekta Kapoor’s adult comedy, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, says he can’t understand why everybody’s hyperventilating about a film he gets to act in after a gap of four years. After all, the genre is working for him, keeping his floundering career alive, and making enough money to inspire his producers to think about sequels.

He has a point. Because for every purist who scoffs at the kind of pointless films Bollywood offers in the name of adult comedy, there will be 10 others who’d say January 2016 couldn’t have been any better for them. After all, the week after Kya Kool, we have another ‘adult comedy’ ready for release: Sunny Leone’s Mastizaade.

Not that our filmmakers have not made good sex comedies - even in the early 80s, we have had the likes of Shaukeens (the 1982 Basu Chatterjee film starring Ashok Kumar, AK Hangal and Utpal Dutt; not its terrible remake). We had a film like Mixed Doubles (2006, starring Rajat Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma) and more recently, Hunterr (2015 starring Gulshan Deviaah and Radhika Apte), to name a few. The problem is not with the genre but the treatment, its end result and BO success. The fact that these bottom-of-the-barrel products set the box office on fire is the disturbing trend.

Truth be told, it is a vicious circle. If stupid and vulgar films earn big bucks at the box office, why would a producer risk his money on anything else? For every Masaan or Titli that limps its way to even touch five-digit figures on the ticket windows, there is a Masti or Humshakals that ‘break records’ and earn crores.

Whichever side of the divide you decide to stand, here’s a look at some of the most vulgar but best-selling films Bollywood has dished out to us in the past.

1. Masti (2004)
It all began with Indra Kumar’s Masti where he featured Vivek Oberoi, Tushar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani in the lead. Surprisingly, it was a hit at the ticket windows!

2. Kya Kool Hain Hum (2005)
Just in case Rohit Shetty wasn’t available for Golmaal franchise or wasn’t ready to cast Tusshar Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor ensured her brother had a franchise of his own. The box office success of Kya Kool Hain Hum made sure that the sequels will simply not stop.

3. Do Knot Disturb (2009)
Govinda and Lara Dutta paired up for the David Dhawan film but the makers failed them and simply made a cringe-fest.

4. Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum (2012)
The film repeated the success of Kyaa Kool Hain Hum at the box office, but that didn’t make it a good movie.

5. Grand Masti (2013)
Director Indra Kumar’s adult comedy hit the bull’s eye at the domestic box office - it has crossed Rs 100-crore mark and a trade analyst says it has become “the first adult film to attain the status”. When the film was scheduled for a TV premiere, it was taken to the court for allegedly containing vulgar and obscene content besides degrading women. The film was, however, allowed to be aired.

6. Nasha (2013)
It proved to be a dud at the box office but remained in limelight for all the wrong reasons -- Poonam Pandey’s vulgar moves and cringe-worthy looks notched up all the views on YouTube.

7. The Shaukeens (2014)
Starring veteran actors like Piyush Mishra and Annu Kapoor, the film claimed to be a modern take on the 1982 hit Shaukeens. A guest appearance by Akshay Kumar did not work too well for the movie but it did have a decent run in the theatres.
