MANIT director Appu Kuttan said, “The decision is not in my hands. I have informed the ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) and the board of governors (BOG) about this situation. Only the BOG can take a decision in this regard. I am waiting for their reply.”

The assistant professors are asking the administration to hold an emergency BOG meeting to resolve the issue. The statute of MANIT states that the BOG can hold emergency meetings, so there was no question of delaying it, said a professor.

According to the professor, in 2013, the MHRD had issued an order that before applying the four-tier flexible system of recruitment, National Institutes of Technology (NITs) should clear their backlog. However, unlike other NITs, MANIT had not clear the backlog of promoting assistant professors, which is why the grade pays of many assistant professors had not been upgraded for the past five to six years.

According to new rules, faculty members would be interviewed for promotion from tier-3 to tier-4.
