Barkatullah University of Bhopal and Indore’s Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalaya, considered to be among the top universities in Madhya Pradesh, were surprise omissions in the list.

More than 3,500 government and private universities were assessed based on various parameters, including research facilities, students’ employability and popular perception.

These are the first-ever government-backed rankings of higher educational institutes by the HRD ministry.

Rankings were given under four categories – universities, engineering, management and pharmacy. Indian Institute of Science Bangalore was declared the best university in the country.

Engineering and management institutes in the state, however, fared better. Under the management category, two institutes – Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM)-Bhopal and Indian Institute for Management (IIM)-Indore – were among top 10, securing 8th and 10th positions respectively. Indian Institute of Management Bangalore topped the list under this category.

IIM-I director Rishikesha T Krishnan expressed happiness over the institute ranking among top 10. “This is a tribute to the efforts put in by our faculty, students, staff and alumni. At the same time, we are committed to improving our rank in the years ahead,” he said.
