Behind closet doors: Purab Kohli

The actor prefers wearing black all day, every day, and refuses to walk out of his house in pink

As we enter Purab Kohli’s home in Bandra’s Pali Hill, we notice that it is in complete disarray. The house wears that someone-just-moved-in look — with boxes of clothes and other things still unpacked. Kohli moved back to the city recently, after living in Goa for a few years. And just like his bare home, Kohli, too, sports a minimalistic look. Dressed in a round-neck tee with worn-out denims, he talks about his style inspirations and his love for expensive boots.

Style no-no: “As an actor. I’m supposed to wear everything that is given to me when essaying a character. But when left to me, I don’t think I would ever walk out of my home wearing pink.”

Impulsive shopper: “If I like something, I just pick it up. You’ll seldom catch me browsing through racks of clothes. I do basic shopping.”

Most memorable purchase: “It is not the most expensive, but is definitely the most lavish thing I own —the brown cowboy boots from Texas. I spent half the money I got for the film on the boots; they are 11 years old now and I wear it a lot.”

On Indian Men: “I feel men especially in India, have limited choices. They are unadventurous when it comes to clothes. I am quite open.”

Fashion Faux-pas: “I don’t think I have done anything drastic to be embarrassed about. But I did once wear a really tight suit to an awards function. I couldn’t sit down all night because my pants were too tight.”

Minimalistic Style: “I am not an accessories junkie. I wear a rudraksh as a bracelet because it is close to me. Earlier, I would wear a lot of bracelets and earrings, but now I have reached a phase where I like to maintain a clean look.”

Favourite shopping destination: “I have observed that European clothes fit me better. So I do a lot of my shopping only in London. I also like Singapore and have found some great clothes in Barcelona. I shop in Mumbai as well, but sporadically. London just works out conveniently as I spend a lot of my time there.”

Traditional Shopper: “I am afraid of online shopping. I am a bit traditional as I like to try on things.”

At home: “Just a pair of boxer shorts or a pair of light denims and a tee.”

Style icons: “Sonam Kapoor is quite stylish. Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor turn up pretty well because they are comfortable in what they wear.”

All about black: “Most of my go-to outfits are all black. I have been living in these black Toms shoes and black jeans for days.”
