Marking a year of the car-free day initiative, hundreds of cyclists pedalled on Sunday to spread awareness about road safety. Around 300 cyclists gathered at Huda City Centre Metro station early morning to participate in 30km and 10km tours as part of Cyclothon 2016. The event coincided with the World Car Free Day aimed at increasing sensitivity and awareness about road safety laws.
The event began with a flash mob following which the riders set out on the Cyclothon that passed through the Raahgiri route across Sushant Lok, Golf Course and finally moved towards the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road. The riders returned from the Gurgaon-Faridabad Toll to end their 30km route near Park Plaza Hotel. The 10km fun ride returned from Kachra Chowk, Gurgaon-Faridabad Road.
Along the stretch, schoolchildren displayed posters, paintings and performed street plays about road safety and its essential elements.
The event was flagged off by Rajbir Deswal, additional director general of police, Haryana, Sandeep Khirwar, Gurgaon commissioner of police, and Ironman Abhishek Mishra. All of them took part in the Cyclothan.
“Raahgiri, car-free day, cyclothon are all means to achieve zero road fatalities. We support such initiatives so that they can help create awareness and lead to safer, congestion-free streets in Gurgaon,” Khirwar said.
The event was organised by Cyclothon World in partnership with Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, Gurgaon Police, NASSCOM, Nagarro and The Raahgiri Foundation.
