The forest department has urged Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to follow orders laid down by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to check dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the Aravallis.

The forest department has urged Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to follow orders laid down by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to check dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the Aravallis. The area was supposed to be converted into a city forest.

The region is notified under general Section 4 and 5 of the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA), 1900, where non-forest activities are restricted.(HT PHOTO)

The letter appeals to the civic bodies to take strict action in compliance with the NGT order. Also, it stated that no measures have been taken by the municipal corporation to curb illegal dumping of waste in the area.

“…..Dumping of waste has been noticed in Kachra Chowk and photographs of waste dumping were taken on June 15,” the letter to the MGC stated.

On January 22, the National Green Tribunal had directed the MCG and Huda to stop dumping construction waste in the Aravallis.

The NGT order came after a plea was filed by environmentalist Vivek Kamboj, who had alleged that the municipal corporations of Gurgaon and Faridabad were disposing industrial waste and construction debris in forest areas on Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, on January 17.

Further, dumping of waste has also been noticed in the natural drain of Chakkarpur, which is being revived by the forest department.

“The filling of natural drain will result in waterlogging on the connecting road between Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road and Faridabad-Gurgaon Road. It is requested that you take measures to comply with the NGT order to avoid legal complications,” the letter states.

Environmentalists also criticised the civic bodies. They said that a special investigation team had been formed by the district administration to probe a case related to dumping of C&D waste in the Aravalli forest area in January. The report was submitted in March. It was recommended that the government and private agencies refrain from dumping waste in forest areas. However, nothing has been done on ground.
