More than a decade after the Industrial model township (IMT) that houses 2,000 industrial plots came into being in Manesar, the township is expected to get its own fire station soon.

An official of the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) said the industries body has obtained necessary clearances from the state government and an estimated budget of `4.64 crore has been allotted for the project.

Now, the Manesar region has only three fire tenders -- one with Hero Honda Motors and two with Maruti Udyog Ltd. The nearest fire station is 15 kilometres away in Sector 37, Gurgaon.

In case of an emergency, the fire tenders from the Gurgaon station take at least 25 minutes to reach the township in view of the road conditions and traffic load. On numerous occasions the IMT was forced to rely on fire tenders of the private firms.

The IMT spreads across 3,500 acres and the HSIIDC will establish the new fire station on a two-acre plot in Sector 8. The HSIIDC has set a six-month time frame for the completion of the project. Once completed, the fire station will be handed over to the fire department.

“Earlier, a fire tender used to take around 30 minutes to reach IMT. Hence, Sector 8 was chosen for establishing a fire station as it is centrally located and close to areas where fire accidents are common,” an HSIIDC official said.

The fire station will be vital as it will cater to the eight sectors of Manesar, the upcoming special economic zones, and industrial areas of Tauru, Bhinola, Farrukhnagar and Haileymandi.

A fire department official said a suitability certificate has been issued for the proposed fire station.

The fire station project has been in limbo for the last few years as the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon and the HSIIDC could not come to terms on certain matters.

Sources said the HSIIDC wanted the MCG to incur the construction costs for building a fire station as the fire department was under the civic body’s ambit. Though the MCG had issued a no objection certificate (NOC) to the Sector 8 plot owners, the civic body wanted the township promoter to create infrastructure for the fire station.
