Overnight rain that followed high speed winds brought the mercury down by several notches in Gurgaon, much to the respite of residents on Monday morning.
The light rain in morning led to traffic snarls on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway giving the commuters early morning traffic pangs for more than one hour. Vehicles moved bumper-to-bumper on both sides from Cyberhub flyover to Iffco chowk flyover on NH8 during peak office hours.
Apart from the Expressway, busy roads like MG Road, Iffco Chowk turn and Huda City Centre also witnessed traffic snarls inside the city.
A pleasant morning that saw light rain gave way to sunny afternoon. The temperature was recorded as 36.1 degrees Celsius, compared to 41 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The minimum temperature hovered around 23.4 degrees Celsius.
Weatherman has predicted partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thunderstorm for next two days.
“The minimum temperature in Gurgaon will remain around 23 degrees Celsius for next two days. It will be partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain, thunderstorm or duststorm. Rain in the hills of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have caused the sudden change in weather In Delhi-NCR,” said a weather department official. The temperatures will soar again towards weekend, he said.
Many roads were submerged in water and blocked with fallen trees giving a tough time to commuters on Monday morning. Uprooted trees were spotted on the Delhi Gurgaon Expressway, old Delhi Gurgaon road, Sector 22/23 road, Palam Vihar, and in many parts of old Gurgaon leading to traffic snarls.
Amid downpour that continued overnight, power outages were reported in several areas of both old and new Gurgaon. The power supply in some areas including DLF City phases was restored post midnight.
On Sunday night, sudden rain accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Gurgaon on bringing normal life to a standstill and plunging half of the city into darkness. Trees were uprooted and power lines disrupted in several parts of city. In some areas, transformers fell down along with pillars supporting them.
The downpour that started at 8:30 on Sunday pm stopped at 9.30pm after which the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) personnel set out to repair electricity lines but heavy winds gave them a tough time. Several spells of rain were recorded overnight across Gurgaon.
The dip in mercury has also brought down the demand for electricity in Gurgaon which has been witnessing power outages as long as 5-10 hours duration last week.
