A Jawaharlal Nehru University student has been arrested for allegedly raping a classmate after getting the 24-year-old drunk in his hostel room, police said on Sunday.
A student of Centre for Historical Studies, Udhip, 23, was arrested on May 19, the day the woman complained about the assault that took place in the last week of December.
The woman said she didn’t go to police immediately but changed her mind later. A medical examination confirmed rape, police said.
“The case is now with police and the university will cooperate in investigation,” a JNU spokesperson said.
Udhip, she told police, had organised a party in his room in Lohit hostel — a facility shared by boy and girl students — and invited a group of friends.
Four of the 18 hostels at the prestigious university are mixed. Girls can visit boys hostels but the reverse is not allowed.
Udhip and another student forced her to consume liquor and she passed out. When she woke up the next day, she found she had been raped, police said. She was alone in Udhip’s room as others had left.
DCP(South) Ishwar Singh confirmed arrest of Udhip who has been sent to judicial custody.
