A ruling Samajwadi Party MLA, the only one of 403 MLAs in UP Assembly to cycle to the Vidhan Bhawan, was left without his prized possession on Wednesday following the theft of his cycle.
The Bhadohi city MLA Zahid Beg is known for cycling from his home to the bhawan whenever the house is in session. Incidentally, the eco-friendly transport is also the party’s symbol.
Beg had spent Rs 8,000 on the sports model, which he bought last year from Aminabad market.
The 48-year-old said he left for his assembly constituency on January 29 and had parked the cycle in the gallery of the building where his house is, on Park Road.
“Lagta hai meri cycle kisi ko pasand aagayi aur wah saath le gaya (It seems somebody took a liking for my cycle and took it along),” Beg joked.
He said he found out about the theft from his associate Bhupendra Yadav, who stays in the same flat.
“The cycle was parked there as I was out of station and nobody else uses it. Somebody stole it between 3 pm and 6pm on Wednesday when nobody was present in the flat,” Beg added.
Yadav, a zila panchayat member, filed an FIR about the theft in Hazratgang police station on Thursday. Inspector Vijaymal Yadav said police were investigating the case.
Beg became an MLA in the 2012 assembly election after defeating the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, Ravindra Nath Tripathi by over 16,000 votes.
