The states are opposing holding of MCI’s common entrance test — The National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) — on the ground that their exams are pre-scheduled and students have already enrolled themselves.

A bench headed by Justice AR Dave told MCI counsel, senior advocate Vikas Singh to either file the response or hand over the same to the court on the next date of hearing, which is Thursday.

The bench, which commenced hearing the states, unaided colleges and minority institutions against NEET, said there was no urgency to pass the order. “We will hear all the stakeholders and give a decision,” the bench said.

MCI opposed all the contentions raised against NEET.

With states and colleges advocating the need to have their own entrance exam, the bench asked them if they had a uniform fee structure.

“So many states conduct separate tests. They must be demanding separate fees. What about the parents and students? They have to move from one place to another,” noted the bench.
