People with disabilities to get universal ID cards: Union minister

At a workshop on ‘Accessible India Campaign’, Gehlot said two hostels wil be constructed in Jaipur and Kota to accommodate 500 boys and girls. “If the state government sends the proposal after allotting land, the Centre will give Rs 13.50 crore, while the state allocate Rs 1.50 crore and the plot. After receiving the proposal, funds will be released in three months.”
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has launched Accessible India Campaign throughout the country for achieving universal accessibility for people with disabilities.
Five national sports centres and similar facilities at district headquarters will be built across the country, the social justice and empowerment minister added.
Gehlot’s state counterpart Arun Chaturvedi lauded the Centre’s efforts to highlight the plight of the disabled people.
“The state government will send the proposals for construction of two hostels at Jaipur and Kota, and hostels for people with disabilities at seven divisional headquarters,” he said.
Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishnapal Gurjar said 30,000 speech and hearing impaired children are born every year, of which 50% of them can lead normal lives if cochlear implants are done.
Gurjar said his department has empanelled 220 hospitals in the country and 350 children have underwent cochlear implant surgery.
Similarly, 2.50 lakh people have been provided artificial limbs and equipment such as crutches.
“Emphasis is on modernisation for which Rs 265 crore will be spent so that people with disabilities get latest prosthetic and equipment,” he added.
