Police and excise officials raided a hooch manufacturing unit at Jhinjhinyali village in Jaisalmer on Wednesday which is believed to be the source of spurious liquor that killed 11 people in Barmer on Monday.
The team seized 50 litres of spurious liquor, 50 litres of spirit and around 1,000 empty bottles and fake branding materials of popular brands, said district excise officer Mohanram Puniya.
The unit owner identified as Mohan Singh, a resident of Jhinjhinyali village, and associate Devi Singh, a resident of Ramsar in Barmer, had scooted before the the raid.
Liquor has been a hot-button issue in Rajasthan, whose excise policy focuses on generating additional revenue by heavily taxing liquor — from distillers and brewers to liquor shops. Former MLA Gurusharan Chhabra had died on November 3 after a 33 day-long hunger strike demanding a liquor ban in the state.
Eleven teams of the excise department assisted by two police teams are investigating the Barmer hooch deaths and source of spurious liquor.
