“I have been to Varanasi earlier but not for so long. Last year, I was here for a day to stage my play at Banaras Hindu University,” says the actor who is here for over two weeks now.

“Of course, there is a lot of chaos and driving is of another level here but it’s a beautiful city which looks even better on camera. I am enjoying every bit of my stay,” he tells HT City.

The film is being directed by Dheeraj Kumar and debutant Aishwarya Devan plays the female lead. Govind Namdev, Akhilendra Mishra, Manoj Joshi, Manoj Pawha and Priyanka play crucial roles in the suspense thriller.

“It’s about this person Kashi who is in search of his sister. So, the city (also known as Kashi) plays an important character in the film. Also, it’s entirely set in Banaras,” Sharman reveals the plot.

“Kashi’s beloved is a journalist who comes from Lucknow to write an article on the city,” he says. The team is expected to shoot the film in the city till October 5.

Besides films, Sharman is keeping himself busy in theatre.

In his last visit to Varanasi he staged his play ‘Raju, Raja, Ram aur Main’ in which he plays four different characters. He is also doing another play ‘Main Aur Tum’ in which he has acted and directed as well.

“Theatre is something where I come from. For my films I took a 10 years break but now I am back to my first love. I am enjoying going back to the theatre. Acting in front of live audience and getting instant feedback is fun. I am honing my skill through theatre…it’s like what riyaaz is for music,” he says.

His last few films — Hate Story 3, 1920 London and Wajah Tum Ho — have been in thriller genre and have done decent business.

“Audience liking the film and it making money is half battle won. Making a film is fine but the real challenge is release part and its performance. I am happy to get love from the audience,” says Sharman who was last seen on TV in 2009 where he hosted game show PokerFace: Dil Sachcha Chehra Jhootha.

“I am not looking forward to do TV for now but I am open to do the stuff like that (hosting reality shows),” he says while revealing his immediate plans.

“After Kashi, I will be shooting for another film Bablu Bachelor, a RomCom, with Sonalee Kulkarni and Tejashri Pradhan.”

It will be directed by Agnidev Chatterjee and shot in Mumbai and Lucknow in October end.
