Egyptian Eman Ahmed’s weight-loss surgery at Mumbai hospital a success, say doctors
Doctors from Saifee Hospital confirmed that Eman Ahmed underwent a sleeve gastrostomy
Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, the nearly 500-kg Egyptian and possibly the world’s heaviest woman, successfully underwent a surgery to reduce the size of her stomach at Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital, doctors said on Thursday.
Doctors at Saifee Hospital said Ahmed underwent a sleeve gastrostomy, a surgical weight-loss procedure that reduces the size of the stomach to 15% of its original size, on March 7. Doctors also removed a large portion of the 36-year-old’s stomach fat and limited her food consumption ability.
“Once she is stable, she will return to her hometown and her weight loss progress will be tracked by the team of doctors. She has already lost over 100kg with the help of liquid diet, including protein and fibre supplements, and we are hoping that she will lose another 100kg during the course of 6-8 months,” one of the doctors treating Ahmed said.
She will go back to the port city of Alexandria with the help of the money raised through an online crowd-funding campaign started by her family and the Saifee Hospital trust.
As Eman will need a series of bariatric procedures over the next few years to achieve best results, her travel costs are going to be covered by the online crowdfunding campaign started under the banner of, ‘Help Save Eman - The Heaviest Woman in the World.’
The campaign, which intends to raise about Rs 50 lakh, has almost reached its halfway with 196 supporters donating over Rs 21 lakh.
She had not left her house for 25 years until she was flown to Mumbai in a special cargo aircraft in February to undergo medical treatment for weight reduction.
