Technology plays truant on JEE Advanced results day
JEE Adv results website portal ---- jeeadv.ac.in --- remained unresponsive during most part of Sunday, as students, parents and teachers struggled to check the results
IIT aspirants on Sunday were in a spot, as more than six hours after the results of the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Adv) were declared, many were unable to access their results.
The JEE Adv serves as the entrance parameter for 22 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian School of Mines (ISM).
The JEE Adv results website portal ---- jeeadv.ac.in --- remained unresponsive during the large part of the day, as students, parents and teachers struggled to check the results. Many students had to visit the IIT-Bombay campus in Powai, where the institute had put up the merit list.
“I tried to login the result website multiple times, but in vain. Finally, after 30-40 attempts and spending an hour, I was able to track my rank,” said Hemang Shekhar, an aspirant.
Preey Shah, another aspirant, was not as lucky though. “My rank was conveyed to me by a friend who went to IIT-B to check the results. I couldn’t check it on the website.”
The website server crashed around 10am right at the moment the results were uploaded. While some students were able to check their ranks late afternoon, others weren’t so lucky.
“We were trying to get into the portal since morning, but we couldn’t access the results till the evening,” said the mother of an aspirant.
As the day grew old, aspirants became more and more anxious. Vinay Kumar, managing director, Rao IIT, said, “We have received 200-300 calls from anxious parents and students since morning. I had gone to IIT-B to find out the toppers from our classes and informed them about their results.”
The coaching classes were highly critical of the IITs’ handling of the results.
“This amounts to harassment of the students. Can’t they handle such a small traffic?” said Kumar. Around 1.5 lakh students had appeared for JEE this year.
The problem was accentuated when students were not able to contact IIT Guwhati, which conducted the entrance examination this year.
“The IITs should have declared the results on Monday. There was no one to pick up our calls at IIT-Guwhati on Sunday,” said Kawal Gupta, general manager, PACE coaching classes.
