Noida: Student accuses prof of asking sexual favours for attendance
A first year student at the school of information technology at Gautam Buddha University has accused a professor of seeking sexual favours. An internal committee has been set up to look into the matter.
A first-year student at the Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida has accused a professor of asking for sexual favours in return for clearing attendance on Friday.
The incident came to light when a group of students accompanied the victim to the Registrar’s office to file a written complaint. The group demanded that swift action be taken against the accused, a professor in the electrical engineering department.
“He (the professor) called me in his cabin after working hours under the pretence of discussing my situation – I was going to be disbarred because of lack of attendance. He called me to stand close to him by showing me a file and then pulled my shirt and continued to forcibly kiss me,” said the victim, a student at the school of information and communication technology. The incident allegedly took place on Thursday evening.
“A group of about 15 students accompanied me to the registrar’s office where I filed the complaint in the presence of the Vice Chancellor.”
The victim also alleged of pressure from the management to sort the matter out without creating too big a fuss. The student has not yet filed a police complaint.
Vice-chancellor Dr JP Sharma said a committee had been formed in accordance with the Supreme Court’s guidelines to look into the complaint.
“The student has made allegations of sexual harassment and has filed a formal complaint. The committee will now investigate and come up with its findings. This committee works independently and will submit its report once the entire incident has been thoroughly investigated,” Sharma said.
The committee is being headed by dean of student affairs, Neeti Rana.
“We will now work as per the procedure laid out. We will talk to both the parties and take into account both the sides,” Rana said.
