The police on Sunday arrested three persons for allegedly looting gold coins from delivery personnel of online shopping portals. The accused would mislead victims by providing incorrect addresses, after which they would redirect the delivery person to a deserted place and make off with the gold coins.
The accused, who were travelling in an Etios car, were apprehended during a checking drive near the Amrapali trisection. The police recovered one and a half gold coins, a countrymade pistol, ammunition, two mobile phones, a PAN card, a debit card and a health card from the trio.
The accused were identified as Pankaj Kumar, 27, Shahrukh, 19, and Shivyant, 18.
On questioning, the suspects said that they were part of a racket involved in robbing online delivery persons after ordering gold coins from shopping websites, the police said.
The trio said that the gold coins were from a heist they had committed near Supreme Tower in Sector 99 on June 6, the police said. They were also involved in a similar incident near JP Hospital in Sector 128 on January 20.
The police said that five gold coins were taken in the June 6 heist and two in the January incident.
The police claimed that a total of five persons were involved in the racket and two of them, Manish Bhati and Gaurav Agarwal, are absconding.
The police said that Pankaj, a cab driver, was the leader of the group.
“The group used to recce a locality and check for deserted houses after which they created fake IDs and order gold coins from shopping websites using the address of the deserted house. The delivery person would find the place unoccupied and the accused would redirect him to another deserted spot. They used to overpower and rob the victims at the deserted spot after thrashing them,” said Gaurav Grover, circle officer.
Making an appeal to the online delivery boys, Dinesh Yadav, additional superintendent of police said, “Delivery boys should only deliver at the registered address. If the receiver is not present, then they should return the product to the company. Under no circumstance should they should deliver at a different address.”
