SECTOR SCAN: Community hall of Shiksha Niketan apartments in Sector 5, Vasundhara turns into a school in the evening for children of domestic helps, security guards, etc.

Children of security guards, domestic helps and laundry workers in Vasundhara Sector 5 flock to Shiksha Niketan apartments at 5 pm every day. Himanshu Verma, a resident of the society, has been teaching underprivileged children free of cost since April this year. The two-hour classes are held at the society’s community hall.

“There are some children who have never been to school while there are others who go to school. We have segregated them and give educational guidance in school work to those who go to school and moral education to those who do not,” said Suchita.

Himanshu, an ad professional, said though he is influenced by the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (save girl child, teach girl child) campaign, he thinks that the privilege of education should not only be provided to girls but also boys.

“We are inspired by the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, but our vision is to save not only girls and their future but also the future of boys,” said the 29-year old.

“So we modified the campaign to “Bache Padhao, Bhavishya Bachao” (teach children, save the future),” he said.

Himanshu also aims to encourage homemakers and retired officials living in the locality who want to use their idle time to do some good work.

A month ago, the couple put up posters across Vasundhara to invite residents to join them in teaching underprivileged children.

“When I learned about the initiative, I decided to join in. I feel content when I teach children for whom education is a far-fetched dream,” said Gunjan Gupta, a homemaker and a resident of Shiksha Niketan apartments.

But these residents say convincing parents of children to send them studies is tough.

“Their parents think it is more useful to send them to work than study,” said SC Sharma, a retired government official who lives in Shiksha Niketan apartments.

Himanshu hopes that more children will come to his classes with time.

“Teaching is my passion. I teach these children without any hope of getting anything in return. I bear the minor expenses of providing the children with stationery items. I hope that more residents join the initiative. We are in the process of bringing more and more children to our classes,” he said.
