Rio 2016 Day 5: Manoj Kumar, archers advance for India; Ledecky wins third gold

Athletes competing in shooting, archery, weightlifting and judo, as well as the women’s hockey team and tennis mixed doubles team will feature for India at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

Another day, and another case of small mercies for India.

Day 5 saw perhaps the nation’s strongest medal hope doused, as Jitu Rai failed to qualify for the final of the men’s 50m air pistol. Judoka Avtar Singh and weightlifter Sathish Sivalingam failed to leave a mark while the Indian women’s hockey team remained winless in Rio after a 6-1 thrashing by Australia.

Archers Bombayla Devi Laishram and Deepika Kumari gave some credence to the proceedings with impressive wins while boxer Manoj Kumar defeated London bronze-medallist Evaldas Petrauskas to end the day on a hopeful note.

In swimming, Michael Phelps took a giant step towards winning his 22nd Olympic medal when he qualified for the 200m Individual medley final and Katie Ledecky guided Team USA to victory in women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

11:47pm (IST): On Wednesday, organisers stepped up police patrols around the Olympic Park on Wednesday after two people were injured when a bus was hit by what security officials said were stones hurled by vandals.

11:30pm (IST): Argentina are out of the football competition, following the 1-1 draw with Honduras.

11:20pm (IST): Earlier in the day, Jitu Rai failed to qualify for the 50m pistol final.

9.30 PM (IST): Weightlifter Sathish Sivalingam fails to qualify for the men’s 77kg finals. The 24-year-old, hailing from Tamil Nadu’s Vellore, lifted 148 kilograms in the snatch and 181 in the clean and jerk for a total of 329.

9.15 PM (IST): The start of tennis action has been delayed by two hours due to rain in Rio de Janeiro. Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna play the fourth match on Court 3.

6.40 PM (IST): Jitu Rai up to fifth place with series five ongoing. Meanwhile, Bombayla Devi has jumped out to a two-set lead over Taipei’s Lin Shih-Chia in the archery women’s individual round of 32.

5.55 PM (IST): Jitu Rai in 14th place, with a total of 91 in series 1, series 2 underway. Prakash Nanjappa in 38th, with an unimpressive total of 82 in series 1.
