During an interactive session — Coffee with Captain — with party workers at a resort on Pakhowal Road in Ludhiana, Amarinder said: “Since the party can give ticket only to one candidate for a particular seat, it will be ensured that those who don’t get tickets are accommodated as chairmen in corporations, boards and trusts,” he said.

Responding to party workers’ complaints of indiscipline and working against the candidates during the elections by some leaders, Amarinder said: “Nobody can defeat the Congress. It is actually the Congress that defeats the Congress.”

He said indiscipline would not be tolerated and he would see to it that those found guilty of indiscipline were strictly dealt with.

However, Congress workers of the district units remained divided over party’s functioning. One of the party workers rued that they had a weak representation in the Jagraon area. “We have been working for the party for decades and want to continue to do so, but we need a strong representation,” he said.

Another party worker said a full-fledged grievances cell should be formed in all districts where party workers could air their problems and give suggestions.

Another party worker, Birpal Singh, who was with the party for the past 45 years, said Congress’ working had changed over the years and interests and needs of the common man are not taken seriously. “Fresh faces who work for the common man’s rights should be given an opportunity to lead the local units,” he suggested.

Opposing Birpal’s view, another party, Govind Jodhan, said: “Only deserving candidates get an opportunity to run the state unit and the party takes care of all members of the district units.”

Some old-timers raised concerns that they were not being accorded due respect by the party unit in the district as they were not being invited for Congress rallies and other events.

Amarinder also condemned the murder of Namdhari sect matriarch Chand Kaur and demanded a thorough probe in the case.
