Resident of Hostel number 1, Rahat Gupta (name changed), who is also a member of the grievance committee in the premises said, “We get complaints from the hostellers with regard to the broken doors of the washrooms, tasteless food, leaking roofs and unhygienic conditions, but the sad part is that while the complaint box keeps getting filled up, hostel wardens have no time to solve.”

Warden of Hostel number 1, Dr Kamal, said, “I have never got a complaint about the mess as we have a dedicated committee which daily checks the quality of the food. I have told all hostellers that if there is any major complaint, they should leave a letter on my table. We keep checking the complaint registers to keep a tab.

However, assistant at the hostel, Urmila said, “Since the hostel number 1, 2 and 3 are the oldest ones; they need a lot of maintenance. The rooms are very small here. We have 209 rooms and admissions for 418 students are done in this hostel alone.”

Hosteller Kriti Bajaj, who is living in the campus for two years said, “We have heard that the conditions in hostel number 1 and 2 are worse if compared to the hostel number 7 or 8. They are better because here we are living in such a small room which is meant for single girl but two are accommodated.”

Student from hostel number 5 Varsha Mahajan said, “The living conditions in the girls hostels are much better, the washrooms are regularly cleaned, although the doors of the washrooms are not perfect. Our hostel canteen is also not hygienic.”

Nine girls’ hostels are on the campus – Hostel number 1 (Mata Gujri hall), 2 (Laxmi Bai hall), 3 (Sarojini Naidu hall), 4 (Kasturba Gandhi hall), 5 (Savitri Bai Phule hall), 6 (Mother Teresa hall), 7 (Bebe Nanki hall), 8 (Florence Nightingale hall) and 9 (Amrita Pritam hall).

Hostellers paying maintenance fees

The hostellers have to give the routine hostel maintenance charges (dilapidation fee/common room fee/fee for usage and maintenance of fans and geysers fee, and others).

But the students complain that the funds are not being utilised efficiently, since sanitation and hygiene remains a critical area of concern in the hostels.
