A debt-ridden farmer ended his life on Wednesday evening by consuming poison at Sawaddi Kalan near Jagraon in this district.

Victim Gurdeep Singh (70) had failed to repay Rs 3 lakh to a bank. In the evening, he left home and when he didn’t return till late, the family started searching him and found his body in a field. Police from Ludhiana came over to inspect.

Investigation officer Jatinder Singh said a liquor bottle and poison had been found near the body and the autopsy report had revealed that the victim has mixed the two. Victim’s son, Parminder Singh, said the family owned only an-acre-and-a-half. Police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC).
