Chunks of land at Ranjit Avenue, one of the prime locations in the city, have turned into dumping grounds. Development and recreational projects were to come up in these areas.
Municipal workers as well residents can be seen throwing domestic and commercial waste on the 14 acres of land on which a multi-purpose sports complex was to come up. The Amritsar Improvement Trust was assigned the work to construct the complex. At present, it is embroiled in a legal battle with a person who has been laying claim over the land.
Another disputed site that has been converted into a dump lies on the road that leads to the A-block of Ranjit Avenue. Heaps of garbage can be seen accumulated in the area that was to be used for development purposes.
Another plot that is lying vacant and has become a virtual dump is in close proximity to prominent hotels. This 1.6 acre of land has been reserved for constructing a multiplex, but has been awaiting a buyer.
People are welcomed by stench of rotting waste while passing through these areas. Shortage of dumping grounds in the city is compounding the problem.
