Though the Amritsar municipal corporation (MC) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure its name in the second list of the Smart City Mission, their indifferent attitude towards encroachments extending onto the link road near railway station is causing inconvenience to commuters.
The road, which is one of the busiest in the city, has become congested after the encroachments. The vendors have put stalls on both sides of the road, resulting in hassle to people. The encroachments are also disrupting traffic movement in the area.
Rahul Verma, one of the commuters, said, “The chaotic situation prevails since ages. Vendors blocking roads by putting up their stalls is a common phenomenon in the area.”
“Setting up stalls on roadsides not only creates problem for commuters, but also spoils the beauty of the city,” says Jyoti Kumari, a student. She added, “On one hand the MC is making efforts to enter the second list of the Smart City Mission, while on the other hand their indifferent attitude is causing problems for city residents.” Gagandeep Singh, a student, said, “The roads are meant for driving, then why are the vendors setting up stalls on it. The encroachments also result huge traffic jams.”
