Five persons arrested with suspected fake blood plasma in Bathinda

The counter intelligence (CI) wing of Punjab police has seized huge quantity of suspected fake blood plasma and arrested five persons in this connection from a house near Behman Dewana village here.

As many as 21752 packs of suspected fake blood plasma, worth Rs 1.25 crore, were recovered from a truck with refrigeration facility. The fake plasma, as per police has been manufactured using protein rich items such as eggs, milk and soyabean and accused aimed to cheat a private firm by supplying it fake plasma. The accused had taken advance of Rs 20 lakhs from the private firm for providing it blood plasma.

“Fresh Frozen Plasma” was written on each pack which also bears the name of person from whose blood it has been extracted with the date of extraction and expiry date. A team of health officials took samples of seized fake plasma for lab testing.

Those arrested persons include Dilbagh Singh employed as head lab technician in a medical college, his associate in lab Paramjit Singh, Paramjit Singh a lab technician in a private hospital in Bathinda his brother Narinder Singh from Behman Dewana village and Lal Bahadur Singh driver of truck. A case under section 420, 120 B IPC and drugs and cosmetics act has been registered against all five.

Assistant inspector general of CI wing Ajay Maluja said that they had got a tip off that the accused were involved in manufacturing of fake blood plasma which they had to sell to a private firm. The police have recovered 21,752 packs of suspected fake plasma kept in refrigeration facility in truck with the refrigeration facility bearing Maharashtra registration number MH 46 AF 6137.

“Accused Dilbagh worked as head lab technician in a medical college from where he got to know that private firms need blood plasma whose expiry date should be near. The accused started manufacturing of fake blood plasma using protein items such as milk, egg and soyabean. He also had inked an agreement with the firm for sale of the same,” said Maluja. Maluja said that accused aimed to cheat the private firm by supplying fake plasma.

“The accused had got an advance of Rs 20 lakhs from the firm. Using that they had purchased blood packs from Ludhiana spending amount worth Rs 12 lakhs. The manufactured item was to be sold for about Rs 1.25 crore,” expressed Maluja. A truck was hired from Mumbai and same was loaded with the product in Behman Dewana village.

A doctor at Bathinda Civil hospital’s blood bank said that it was impossible to manufacture 21,752 packs of plasma as many number of persons’ blood had to be used and it would have taken months for the process.
