Punjab Gau Sewa Commission chairman Kimti Bhagat, who reached the spot, said Krishnanand was opposing setting up of slaughterhouses and he was facing threat to his life. Bhagat said he had written to the Punjab director general of police (DGP) six months ago to provide security to Krishnanand, but to no avail.

Dismissing theories that Krishnanand might have committed suicide, Bhagat said he had weak eyesight and he couldn’t have driven his vehicle from Binewal to Nangal, a distance of 40km. He apprehended that this might be an attempt to divert the police attention by parking his vehicle on the banks of Nangal channel.

Suspecting foul play in Krishnanand’s disappearance, members of the Gau Raksha Dal blocked the Nangal-Rupnagar road. Deputy inspector general of police GS Sandhu, senior superintendent of police Varinder Paul Singh, sub-divisional magistrate Amarjit Bains, superintendent of police (investigation) Harmeet Singh Hundal and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sant Singh Dhaliwal reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

Expressing concern over his disappearance, industries minister Madan Mohan Mittal directed the police to initiate a thorough probe.
