With an aim to make Ludhiana as graffiti capital of India, the municipal corporation has announced with much fanfare that it is drawing graffiti on the pillars at underbridges of the highways including Ludhiana-Delhi national highway and Southern bypass. It has also started a campaign to beautify the overhead water tanks with graffiti on the flex sheets.
Road safety expert Kamaljit Soi, who is a member of national road safety council, claimed that the graffiti on the overhead water tanks could cause mishaps as these were causing distraction to the commuters.
He claimed that the Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered not to display any advertisements on the highways as commuters get distracted. He also raised questions over the graffiti being drawn on the pillars under flyovers. He suggested that the civic body should take consultation regarding this from the experts.
“If any mishap takes place on roads due to distraction by graffiti, the municipal corporation should be held responsible,”he said.
A city resident Kuldeep Singh Khaira claimed that the graffiti should not be drawn on the overhead water tanks which are visible from the roads.
On the other hand, a member of non-government organisation (NGO) Sambhav, Rahul Verma, said that the graffiti on pillars underbridges in the city areas are giving a beautiful look to the city. He claimed that there were no chances of mishaps at Samrala Chowk, Jalandhar bypass and other places as the graffiti are being drawn on underbridges where the speed limit on the roads is 50 km/hr.
Municipal corporation commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said, “Graffiti is being done in all major cities of India. If there will be any legal guidelines we will comply.”
