Gurdev Singh of Jhabal village in Tarn Taran district and Sally Kumar of Gurdaspur are the men under arrest on the charge of stealing the Pathankot taxi, while their alleged accomplice Jaskaran Singh of Gurdaspur is on the run. The accused have no criminal history, though a few years ago, the Qadian police had questioned Gurdev Singh in a kidnapping case. Amritsar deputy inspector general of police (border range) Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh has also denied any terrorist link to the case. Extra vigil is on in the region since Pakistani terror attacks on its police and air force installations.

The DIG agreed that terror-attack concerns of the Home Ministry and central intelligence agencies had pushed Punjab Police to move fast. “Accused Gurdev Singh is a marginal farmer who took to crime. He has a rented accommodation in Gurdaspur and a Tata Sumo taxi with ‘on Videocon duty’ sticker to get away after crime. The DIG said that after dispossessing Pathankot’s Pardeep Saini of his Swift D’zire cab, the carjackers had removed the SIM (subscriber’s identity module) card of his mobile phone to make it difficult for police to track them.
Around 10.15pm on Saturday, the carjacking at Aujala village near the Babri bypass had triggered an alert in Gurdaspur, Batala, Pathankot, and Hoshiarpur police districts. It happened when Saini was going back to Pathankot after dropping some passengers at Amritsar. Police have recovered the abandoned Tata Sumo and Swift D’Zire from Mann Kaur Singh Chowk in Gurdaspur and Dostpur village in Kalanaur police jurisdiction, respectively. The case was registered at Tibber.
