Drunk man attacks hockey legend Pargat Singh over parking, breaks finger
The accused’s car was blocking the way out of a parking lot. Pargat Singh was allegedly assaulted when he asked the man to let him pass.
An intoxicated man allegedly assaulted former Indian hockey skipper Pargat Singh after a quarrel over parking in Chandigarh’s Sector 9 area recently.
Pargat, who is also the sitting Akali Dal MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, had to be hospitalised after his finger was fractured in the incident – which occurred on Tuesday night.
Police said Kamaljeet Singh, a 26-year-old resident of Sector 22, was arrested and later released on bail. His vehicle, a Toyota Innova, has been impounded.
Pargat told HT that the accused had parked his car in the middle of a road leading out of a parking lot. “When I told him to give way, so I could drive out of the parking lot, he (Kamaljeet) didn’t budge. He was drunk. When I approached him, he attacked me,” he said.
The MLA said he called police personnel stationed at the market, following which the accused was taken to the police station. A written complaint was submitted to the police, he added.
Deputy superintendent of police (central) Satish Kumar said a medical examination has confirmed that Kamaljeet was drunk. A case has been registered against him under sections 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 294 (obscene acts or words in public) of the Indian Penal Code.
