Stating this here on Friday, a police spokesman said Dhanpreet Kaur, Hoshiarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP), had been told to conduct the inquiry and submit a report at the earliest.

Tanda resident Karanjit Kaur had on Thursday claimed that she exchanged vows with Salwinder in a gurdwara at Samastpur village in Jalandhar in 1994 and has a 16-year-old son, Sahilpreet Singh, from the marriage. She had dared the SP to undergo a DNA test.

Karanjit alleged that Salwinder, an assistant sub-inspector at that time, had tied the knot with her despite being already married. She said she came in contact with Salwinder through a friend and had no idea that he was married. The woman alleged that after she gave birth to a son in 1999, Salwinder started ignoring her. Showing the birth certificate of her son, in which his father’s name is mentioned as Salwinder Singh, Karanjit said she was ready for any inquiry. However, the woman had failed to show any picture of her wedding, saying that Salwinder had taken away all such photographs.

Karanjit alleged that she made several complaints to senior police officers against Salwinder, but no action was taken. “Once I was called by a Jalandhar-range deputy inspector general (DIG) for my statement, but the inquiry did not make any headway,” she claimed. Karanjit said her son had also filed an online complaint to the DGP’s office. The woman said she would write to the chief minister and explore all other options to get justice.
