The rising case of type-2 diabetes diagnosis among youngsters has raised concern among diabetic specialists, who strongly urge for awareness and change in lifestyle among youth.
Endocrinologist from Fortis Hospital, Dr Gurpreet Singh said that from past 3-4 years, there has been 20-30% rise in teenage population diagnosed with diabetes, generally belonging to the age group of 12-16 years.
To this, Dr Gurmeet Singh, medicine specialist, HOD of civil hospital added,
“The diabetic patients are on a constant rise from past 4-5 years, with the age group ranging from 5-50 years. However, detection at an early stage actually leads to complications, since the patient gets on medication throughout his or her life.
With such rise in the patients, I fear the problem might become an epidemic in the coming years.”
With a strong aim to raise awareness, managing director of ‘Free Diabetics World’ campaign, Dr Surinder Gupta said, “While conducting numerous diabetic camps, one thing which I observed was the striking difference between the blood sugar level of a cyclist (90-100) and a motorcyclist (above 150).
To this, there is scanty attendance of youth in such voluntary camps as I still believe that diabetic diagnosis might be a stigma in today’s families.”
