Stuck with Jat stir? Special Chandigarh-Delhi trains take the tracks

A special train from here departed for the Anand Vihar station for Delhi via the western Uttar Pradesh route at 4.30pm on Monday after all rail and road routes via Haryana to the national capital remained closed owing to the Jat community’s agitation for quota. Over 1,500 people were onboard the 17-coach train that included three air-conditioned coaches. The train would reach Delhi after six hours and then make the journey back, via Ambala, Saharanpur, Meerut and Ghaziabad. Two officials of the Government Railway Police were also onboard. There would be another special train at 11am on Tuesday, officials said.
There was rush but no melee. The passengers were asked to buy general category tickets and get them converted into whichever category’s according to the seat they take inside. The plan was to depart at 4pm but it was delayed to wait and adjust more people. The UT administration had sent its civil defence volunteers to help the passengers. Announcements had been made via radio and other means at hotels and dharamshalas to inform people about the train.
The passengers included a baseball team from Nagpur that had stuck here for five days after participating in a tournament, informed a team member, Shubham Vij.
