Indo-Aus film unINDIAN starring Brett Lee to be screened at Cannes

The film unINDIAN starring former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee and Tannishtha Chatterjee, will be screened in the Antipodes section at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival.

We know of former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee’s love for India. Now, the bowler is set for an acting debut in a Bollywood-themed romantic comedy, unINDIAN. The film, which is a joint production by Australia and India, will be screened at the ongoing 69th Cannes Film Festival. Helmed by Anupam Sharma, the cross-cultural Australian comedy, also starring critically acclaimed actor Tannishtha Chatterjee, will be screened in the Antipodes section at Cannes.

The film festival commenced on Wednesday, and will conclude May 22. The film will be screened on May 19 and again on May 21, a statement said. The film will also be screened during St Tropez Film Festival in October later this year. It was produced with financial assistance from Screen Australia and Screen NSW and major investment from Australia India Film Fund.

The producers will be selling the film to various territories, particularly India, through their global sales agents - Yellow Affair at Cannes.

Speaking from Cannes, Miira Paasillinna and Chris Howard from Yellow Affair, said in a joint statement: “We are delighted to be selling this warm and funny Australian film. There have been many queries from India because of the Bollywood cast in the film and also the popularity of Brett Lee and of cricket there. We believe the film deserves an audience as it portrays a positive message about cultural differences and tolerance.”

Sharma will be presenting the film at Cannes Antipodes.

Producer Lisa Duff and Anupam Sharma, enroute to Cannes, also shared: “It is a delight this independent cross-cultural comedy is being screened as part of an Australian focus at Cannes Antipodes, particularly after successful screening at festivals in London and California.”

Bernard Bories from Antipodes said: “Through this beautiful, entertaining, coloured, fresh, dynamic and optimistic movie, Anupam Sharma brings hope and love into the world, our world, which needs it. I am very happy to be able to share this great comedy with the French audience.”

The film also features Supriya Pathak and Gulshan Grover.
