Sufi music has a spiritual connect... the level of spirituality is much higher in Sufism. You surrender to God and the connection can also be felt by the audience, says singer Javed Ali.

Performing in home town brings a lot of ease and excitement for an artist. This is true for singer Javed Ali, too. Born and brought up in Delhi, Ali feels “like home” in the Capital. He says, “Delhi is the place where I’m most relaxed and chill during my shows. I feel jaise mai ghar par hi hun, and I’m performing for known faces. Delhi mei apni wali feeling aati hai. Such warm welcome and love... I have travelled a lot par dilliwalo ki baat hi alag hai.”

Ali was raised in Delhi’s Panchkuian Road and studied at Paharganj. His association with Old Delhi is more than any other Delhibased artist. “Old Delhi is the only place in the Capital that has maintained its authenticity. It has undergone minimum change. Even after several decades, one gets the same old vibes here. I’m happy that Old Delhi’s food is the same, and I can gorge on it whenever I am around,” says Ali. The singer, who is known for his popular numbers such as Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein from Naqaab (2007) and Jashn-eBahaara from Jodhaa Akbar (2008), recently performed at the Sufi festival, Jahan-e-Khusrau. On the importance of such festivals, Ali says, “Sufi music is among the oldest genres, and such festivals keep it alive.”

He adds, “Sufi music has a spiritual connect. It’s not that other genres don’t have it but the level of spirituality is much higher in Sufism. You surrender to God and the connection can be felt.”
