Kalank box office collection: After five days of its release, the collections of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s film are not encouraging at all as it earned ₹66.03 crore in the domestic market.

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s Kalank is struggling to stay afloat. The Karan Johar magnum opus, made at an estimated cost of 80 crore, has earned 66.03 crore in an extended weekend of five days. Before the film’s release, the trade had predicted 100 crore earning during the weekend.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Kalank is rejected... Has a lacklustre *extended* opening weekend... Will find it difficult to sustain on weekdays... Arrival of #AvengersEndgame [on Fri] will hit biz hard... Wed 21.60 cr, Thu 11.45 cr, Fri 11.60 cr, Sat 9.75 cr, Sun 11.63 cr. Total: 66.03 cr. India biz.” He also compared Kalank’s performance to other films released this year such as Gully Boy and Kesari.

Kalank’s box office collection at the end of day 4 (Saturday) was 54.40 in the domestic market. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Karan Johar’s dream project has been underperforming. On Sunday, he tweeted: “#Kalank is clearly underperforming... Dips on Day 4 [Sat]... Trending is weak, so big biz on Day 5 [Sun] is ruled out... Wed 21.60 cr, Thu 11.45 cr, Fri 11.60 cr, Sat 9.75 cr. Total: 54.40 cr. India biz.”

He also analysed its prospect on the following day saying that the collections had dipped on day 4 and seen its weakening trend, “big business” on day 5 had to be ruled out. However, the film’s international run has been much better that its domestic outing.

Taran followed up his earlier tweet on Sunday to say that on the international circuit, the film was continuing its “strong run”, having picked up 27.43 crores at the end of day 4. He wrote: “#Kalank continues its strong run in the international arena... Wed to Sat total: $ 3.950 mn [ 27.43 cr]... Day 1: $ 740k Day 2: $ 910k Day 3: $ 1.2 mn Day 4: $ 1.1 mn | Key markets... USA+Canada: $ 1.42 mn UK: £ 483k UAE+GCC: $ 950k Australia: A$ 522k #Overseas.”

Directed by Abhishek Varman, the film has been appreciated for its aesthetics but criticised for being tedious. “Directed by Abhishek Varman and shot by the masterful Binod Pradhan, the makers of Kalank not only want every frame to be a painting, but every dialogue a proverb, every scene a portent. The result is beautiful but tedious, an opera that needed a stout songstress to warble through it midway,” wrote Raja Sen in Hindustan Times.

A period drama set in the 1940s, the film also stars Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapoor in prominent roles. The film’s songs Ghar More Pardesiya and First Class have been hits online since they were released online.

The fourth film together of its lead player, Alia and Varun, Kalank also brought together the hit 90s pairing of Sanjay and Madhuri after two decades. The film enjoys a short window at the box office with the superhero extravaganza, Avengers: Endgame, landing this Friday.
