Renuka Shahane has criticised Suchitra Krishnamoorthi for clubbing criminals and sex workers in the same bracket. Read the exchange here.

Actors Renuka Shahane and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi were involved in a Twitter tiff, which ended amicably. Renuka had called out Suchitra for mentioning ‘criminals’ and sex workers in the same breath.

Suchitra had written in a tweet, “Amma always said ‘Money is not everything.Even criminals and wh***s have money. What matters is not money but character and integrity’. I truly truly understand her words only today. Jeez ive never felt more proud of my middle class roots.”

Renuka replied to Suchitra’s tweet and pointed out that comparing criminals to ‘wh***s’ is inappropriate. She wrote, “No disrespect to your Amma @suchitrak but as women let’s try & correct the injustice that our traditions have imposed on wh***s. We castigated wh***s while letting off their customers who are leading ‘respectful’ lives! Let’s not put wh***s & criminals in one bracket at least.”

 

 

She continued, “Wh***s are abused, raped, tortured, drugged, given hormonal injections at a very early age & then raped relentlessly throughout their professional lives. Most of what should be their earnings is taken away by pimps & middlemen or middle women.”

Suchitra seemed to take the criticism sportingly, and wrote back, “Yup good point @renukash Agree with u totally.” The matter seemed to have been resolved when Renuka ended the conversation with, “Big hugs @suchitrak Love you too & you know it.”

 

Renuka has been a vocal supporter of several causes on social media. She had written in support of actor Tanushree Dutta during the Indian #MeToo movement last year, and also shared a personal story in the wake of the sexual misconduct accusations against actor Alok Nath.

Suchitra, meanwhile, has often made controversial statements. She was harassed online after tweeting against the use of loudspeakers for azaan.
