17:11 hrs IST

Jadeja joins the party

After Ashwin’s couple of dismissals, Jadeja too joined the party by getting rid of nightwatchman Piedt for 0. The right-hander missed the line of the delivery and it crashed into his stumps. South Africa have lost their third wicket and are in big trouble.

17:06 hrs IST

Ashwin strikes again

R Ashwin has done the trick for India once again as he gets rid of de Bruyn for 4 to pick his second wicket of the day. The right-hander edged the ball into the hands of keeper Saha and started walking straightaway. India are ending the final session on the perfect note.

17:01 hrs IST

Light meter coming into play

The umpires are constantly checking for bad light as he approach the end of day’s play. Ashwin and Jadeja are trying to bowl as quickly as possible and a wicket here could help India round off a brilliant day.

16:55 hrs IST

Shami returns into attack

Pacer Mohammed Shami bowls a maiden over after returning into the attack. de Bruyn was content with just defending Shami’s fiery deliveries outside the off stump. The Indian pacer will have to bowl a bit closer to the batsmen for them to play a shot.

16:48 hrs IST

First six of the innings

Ravindra Jadeja misses his line for once and Dean Elgar punishes him with the first six of the innings. Since the start of the South African innings, Elgar has looked to play positive cricket and he was been rewarded for it with two boundaries and once six.

16:42 hrs IST

Proteas need a partnership

Dean Elgar is joined in the middle by Theunis de Bruyn and the two will be hopeful of batting through the day from here on. As for India, they will be eager to further dent the South African innings but picking a couple more wickets.

16:35 hrs IST

Ashwin strikes

Since the spinners were introduced into the attack, the pressure was building on the batsmen and India have been finally rewarded for it. R Ashwin sneaks the ball in between the bat and pad of Aiden Markram and the ball crashes into the stumps. Markram heads back into the hut for 5.

16:30 hrs IST

Spin from both ends

Skipper Kohli wants wickets and that he why he has replaced pacers with spinners on both ends. Ravindra Jadeja came into the attack in the fifth over and was hit for a boundary on the first ball by Aiden Markram. Jadeja then pulled things back in control as he bowled five subsequent dots.

16:25 hrs IST

Huge turn for Ashwin

Virat Kohli opted to introduce spinner R Ashwin into the attack in just the fourth over as India look to pile on the pressure over the batsmen. Ashwin bowled a fierce turning delivery that went in between bat and pad but missed the stumps. Good signs these for Ashwin.

16:20 hrs IST

Elgar settling well

Ishant Sharma comes around the wicket to Dean Elgar but bowls on to the hips of the southpaw, who flicks the ball for a boundary past the keeper. This is Elgar’s second boundary of the innings already and he seems to be in good nick.

16:13 hrs IST

Maiden over

Mohammed Shami finds his line and length early on as he bowls a maiden over to Aiden Markram. Shami and Ishant will be crucial for India if they are to build the pressure on the batsmen early. A wicket early on will definitely put the pressure on the visitors.

16:05 hrs IST

Ishant to bowl first over

Indian bowlers will be hopeful of couple of wickets in these last few overs of the day. Ishant Sharma will bowl the first over of the innings while Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram are opening the innings for the visitors. Elgar flicks the ball off his hips for the first boundary of the South African innings on the fourth ball of the first Ishant over.

15:57 hrs IST

India declare at 502/7

Virat Kohli says enough is enough. Ashwin and Jadeja were going nowhere with the scoring rate so might as well bowl some overs at the tired South Africa batsmen and search for some quick wickets. That’s for later but India have declared at 502 for 7, a very good first innings total indeed. India have around 85 minutes (adding lost time on Day 1) to bowl at South Africa, that roughly translates into 20 overs that is of course if the light permits.

15:54 hrs IST

500 for India

There’s a single from Jadeja and India’s 500 is up! All eyes towards Virat Kohli in dressing room now, the declaration could come at any point now.

15:52 hrs IST

What’s up with Ashwin?

Meanwhile, Ashwin is yet to get off the mark and he has already faced 13 deliveries. Not the ideal score when you’re team is looking for a declaration. Ashwin has been looking for singles, perhaps he would be better off if he tries to go for boundaries.

15:41 hrs IST

Saha’s cameo ends

OUT! “How do you get the Indian batsmen out? Bowl bad balls,” says Sanjay Manjrekar in the commentary box. Well it sure wasn’t the best of deliveries, pitched half way down the middle from Dane Piedt, Saha rocks back tries to hoick it over mid wicket but ends up providing a simple catch to the fielder in the deep. But a good little innings considering the fact that India are looking for some quick runs. Saha goes for 21 off 16 balls.

15:36 hrs IST

Saha getting a move on

Before you know it, Wriddhiman Saha has raced to 16 off 12 balls with three boundaries. He has been busy right from the word go. Not a single aerial shot, not a single charge down the wicket to the spinner but simply some handy movement of the wrists and of course opening the face of the bat.

15:23 hrs IST

Twin boundaries from Saha

Wriddhiman Saha gets off the mark with a boundary and then follows it up with another one. Both through the vacant third man area. The first one not that convincing, more of an outside edge but he guided the one nicely on the second occasion. This should give a lot of confidence to the India keeper who is playing his first Test in 2019.

15:17 hrs IST

Third wicket for Maharaj

OUT! Keshav Maharaj gets his third wicket of the match, Hanuma Vihari perishes in his quest to get quick runs. One gets the feeling that India have decided to force the issue and have a good crack at South Africa towards the end today.

15:08 hrs IST

Good over from Philander

Vernon Philander bowls a good line and length to Hanuma Vihari and concedes just three runs in the over. The pacer didn’t give any room to the right-hander and Vihari was content with just nudging the ball around from his body.

15:00 hrs IST

Final session begins

Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari are out in the middle as the final session of the day begins. Keshav Maharaj will bowl the first over of the session as India look to cross the 500-run mark. Both batsmen are relatively new at the crease due to the fall of quick wickets before Tea.

14:28 hrs IST

Mayank goes back

Dean Elgar is into the attack and he strikes. He lobs up a full toss, Mayank smacks it, hard, flat and straight but straight to the man at deep mid-wicket who jogs ahead, tumbles and takes a smart catch. End of a sizzling innings by Mayank.

14:21 hrs IST

Rahane departs

Mayank gets to his double ton, he exults and soon after, Ajinkya Rahane, in a bid to get a move on, departs as he caught in the cover by Temba Bavuma. India are 4 down, but are in a dominant position.

13:39 hrs IST

Mayank is bossing the show

It has been a flawless performance by the opener. Not allowing the spinners to settle, his timely attacking strokes is keeping the intensity going at all times. Top, top knock by the young man.

13:29 hrs IST

Rahane takes guard

Ajinkya Rahane has not enjoyed himself in home conditions and this is the perfect time for him to start scoring runs. The platform is set and the pitch is flat, ideal time for him to stamp his class on the rest of the day’s proceedings.

13:22 hrs IST

KOHLI. IS. OUT

Very soft dismissal. Was a short ball, Kohli was on the backfoot and he looked to work it away towards square leg. The ball did not bounce, took the toe end of the bat and lobbed it straight back to the bowler. Muthusamy has struck, Kohli cannot believe his luck, but has to trudge back!

13:13 hrs IST

Kohli hits his stride

The captain has found the groove and these are ominous signs for South Africa. The drives are back, the confidence in his pulls are back, and, well, he always dominates the spinners.

13:06 hrs IST

India chugging along

1st time Both openers of a team have scored 150 plus runs vs SA in the same innings of the Tests since SA readmission

Overall this is the 3rd time this has happened vs SA in Tests

12:53 hrs IST

Mayank notches up 150

He knows how to score them big runs and Mayank is churning them out here. A neat glance off the hips fetches him a boundary and he notches up 150.

12:44 hrs IST

Steady from India

After the early Pujara jolt, Kohli and Mayank have steadied the ship and are looking to consolidate the innings with some sensible batting. The partnership is chugging along at a fair clip. SA need to string in few tight overs to build pressure on the Indians.

12:27 hrs IST

Kohli on the move

A drive to get his innings on track - Virat Kohli takes control. Fullish ball on the stump and the skipper drives it crisply down the ground. Solid start by the captain to get his innings underway!

12:17 hrs IST

Pujara bowled

What a start for South Africa, what a start for Philander after lunch. Length ball on the off stump, pitches and straightens just a touch to sneak past the defence and knock over the off peg. Pujara walks back on the first ball after lunch. Dream start for South Africa, out walks Virat Kohli!

11:37 hrs IST

Lunch

11:14 hrs IST

Pujara on the move

A long half-volley to get his innings rolling and he has dispatched it to the cover boundary. Not a good ball, it has been that sort of a day for the visitors. They need control here, not getting with such deliveries.

11:06 hrs IST

Rohit departs

Stop the press, SA have struck. Rohit was in ominous touch, he was looking to tonk every ball, and well, he was doing as he wanted to. However, Maharaj gets on to spin, the ball bounced a touch, broke past the outside edge and de Kock was ready to whip the bails off.

Finally, finally, the respite for the Proteas, but boy, this has been one sensational innings!

10:52 hrs IST

Absolute carnage

This is absolute carnage from India - both openers are dismantling South Africa and the runs are flowing like a gushing river with no barricades. Drooped shoulders on the field are telling a story, Test cricket does these things to you!

10:40 hrs IST

150 for Rohit

He knows how to get em’ daddy hundreds. And, well, he has notched up his 150. Mayank is on the attack at the other end, they are doing as they please right now. India are motoring on, there is nothing Faf can do to stop this run flow.

10:32 hrs IST

Acceleration is on

Well, the forecast is not too good after Tea and hence, both the openers are looking to get a move on after Mayank’s century. They are attacking the spinners, Faf is shuffling his fielders all over the place, the sparse crowd is going nuts. India are pulling away here, there is no respite for the visitors!

10:18 hrs IST

Stat attack

This is the 10th instances where both the IND openers scored a Test ton in the same innings.

1st time both the openers have scored tons vs SA in Tests

10:03 hrs IST

Ton up Mayank

It has been a solid Test innings, it has been solid Test career so far. Mayank Agarwal has notched up his maiden Test ton. The young man has been in consistent form ever since his debut and in soaks in the applause. All those years of hard work in the dust of first-class cricket is finally bearing fruits. Maiden ton! India are absolutely crushing SA right now!

9:49 hrs IST

Rohit has been dropped

Quinton de Kock is standing right up to the stumps and hence was not able to snaffle the catch after the ball kissed the outside edge of Rohit Sharma’s bat. The first real chance for South Africa and it has not been grasped. Rohit gets a life!

This is India’s highest partnership for the opening wicket against South Africa.

9:37 hrs IST

Spin from the other end

Keshav Maharaj with the ball from the other end. He got the ball to turn on Day 1 and will be the key element if South Africa have to make a comeback in this match. Good tight over to get things going on Day 2.

9:31 hrs IST

Rohit takes guard

Philander runs in with the ball in hand and the first ball is on target. Rohit defends is back down the pitch. The action has begun on a clear day. And the second ball is clipped away to fine leg and Rohit gets going with a boundary

9:21 hrs IST

Weather update

We will have an on-time start, the weather is clear and these are really good signs for the game. Perfect conditions and a perfect pitch to bat and this is what India would love. Rohit is already past a century and Mayank is eyeing his maiden ton. Good day in store for the hosts, can the visitors apply few brakes?

9:11 hrs IST

8:34 hrs IST

Rohit in the mood

Speaking at the end of the day’s play, Rohit said that opening the batting always suited his game as he loved to wear his pads and walk straight out to take part in the action.

“I think it suits my game, just wear the pads and bat. Waiting game, when I used to bat at five or six number, I won’t say it didn’t suit my batting. Your mind is fresh, we know we have to play the new ball. You know the bowlers who are bowling with the new ball do, so the game plan is easier for you. You know you have to face the new ball and these will be the fielders. At six, the ball is reversing, field placement is different and you need to keep all those things in mind. That game of wearing the pads and going in to bat suits my game,” said Rohit.
