Five new cases of dengue surfaced in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, taking total number of such cases in the state this year to 17.

“One case is from Dehradun, one from Roorkee and two from Tehri. One is an outstation case from Saharanpur. The patient from Dehradun has already recovered. The other four are under treatment,” said Subhash Joshi, Dehradun district officer of vector borne diseases.

This brings Dehradun district’s total number of dengue cases to 11 and the state’s to 17.

Six cases of Chikungunya have also surfaced in the state this year. Out of these, three have been reported from Nainital, two from Almora and one from Pithoragarh.

The state’s first case of dengue death was also registered last week. Suraj, a 38-year-old resident of Pauri, lost his life in Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Hospital.

“Suraj was admitted to the hospital on August 28 and he passed away the next day. His blood sample was sent for Elisa test on August 31 and it tested positive,” Joshi said.

Joshi said it took time to trace the patient’s whereabouts.

“He had listed a Pauri address. When our team reached there, we found out that he was living in a rented house in Rishikesh’s Chaudha Bigha area. We inspected the area in Rishikesh and found no larva. Pauri’s district authorities have also been alerted,” Joshi added.
