Idris Elba’s disdain for being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no secret, but did you know that he didn’t even know what the series’ abbreviated title until recently? Elba was asked about the ‘MCU’ while promoting his directorial debut, Yardie, and responded with, “What’s MCU?”

The actor said that he didn’t know that’s what the Marvel movies were called. When he was told its meaning, he said, “Oh, right, I have never heard that before. I thought it was Manchester United... but don’t worry about it.”

The actor played the Asgardian Heimdall in the films, and his character was one of the first to be killed in the recent Avengers: Infinity War. Elba has, in the past, spoken about not particularly enjoying being a part of the MCU. He said working on Thor: The Dark World was ‘heartbreaking’. “This is torture, man. I don’t want to do this,” Elba recalled telling his agent, in an interview to the Telegraph. And his agent reminded him that, “You have to, it’s part of the deal.”

And Elba’s feelings haven’t mellowed with time. He recently told Entertainment Weekly that while he enjoyed working on Thor: Ragnarok, the first two Thor movies were ‘work’. “The last one was fun,” he said. “The others weren’t fun. They’re work. But on this one, Taika (Waititi, the film’s director) was great.”

Elba in a recent interview seemed to have turned over a new leaf. He said that because the Marvel movies were about ‘superheroes and guns’ he wouldn’t rule out a resurrection for his character. “It’s been amazing playing in the Marvel family. I’m sure they decided to get rid of as many characters because they’ve run their natural course,” Elba told “I loved playing him, he was my G, my guy.”

Most of the cast is expected to return in some form or the other in next May’s Avengers 4, which will serve as an epic conclusion to the MCU as we know it. Elba recently fuelled speculation that he would be taking over as James Bond when negotiations with director Danny Boyle over Daniel Craig’s final Bond movie fell through.
