Avengers 4 will conclude the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, and directors Joe & Anthony Russo have teased where the plot will take Captain America and Black Widow.

While characters such as Iron Man and Thor were given plenty of stand-out moments in Avengers: Infinity War, the Captain America and Black Widow arc didn’t really step into gear until we were well into the story. The directors of Infinity War - the brothers Joe & Anthony Russo - have now put fans’ worries to rest. Captain America and Black Widow will both be given more to do in the upcoming Avengers 4, they have said in a new interview.

In a video published by Wired, the directors spoke about every character in the sprawling superhero saga, and where the future will take them. They partnered the two up in their first Marvel movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and said that they will have a ‘harder edge’ in Avengers 4.

“In Winter Soldier, what we found so compelling about pairing her up with Captain America was that he is this paragon of morality, and she is a paragon of gray,” the directors said. “But they’ve grown together, and I think when you find them in (Infinity War), they’ve been the Secret Avengers for two years… they’re like a tight-knit family now. Her, Sam Wilson, and Steve Rogers. It’s hardened all of them in a way. You can’t go on the run without it affecting you emotionally, so I think all of those characters — specifically the ones who survived Infinity War, Cap and Natasha — you will see them with a much, much harder edge.”

Cap and his friends went underground in the two years that separate the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The were introduced in a memorable scene in the Infinity War, when Cap stepped out of the shadows of an Edinburgh train station to fight the villainous Thanos’ minions.

Writer Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely previously said that Cap and Black Widow will “have a much bigger role to play in that second film.”

Both him and Black Widow survived Thanos’ infamous finger snap at the end of the film, which claimed the lives of half the universe’s population.

Leaked promo art from the fourth Avengers movie, billed as a significant conclusion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, teases an image makeover for both Cap and Black Widow. In the pictures, Steve Rogers seems to have lost his scraggly beard, and Black Widow appears to have ditched her blonde hair in favour of her natural red, tied in a braid.

Director Cate Shortland was recently hired to helm a solo Black Widow movie, currently in pre-production at Marvel. This is one of only a handful of films that reveal the post-Avengers 4 future that Marvel is planning. Other movies to be in various stages of production include Spider-Man: Far From Home, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Doctor Strange 2 and a sequel to Black Panther.
