Uttar Pradesh IPS officer consumes poison, condition critical: Police
Police said the IPS officer Surendra Kumar Das was suspected to have consumed poison at his official residence in Kanpur’s cantonment area.
A young Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has allegedly attempted suicide at his official residence in Kanpur. Surendra Kumar Das was found unconscious at home early on Wednesday morning by policemen assigned to him.
He was rushed to a city hospital where he is being treated for poisoning.
“His condition is very very critical,” said Dr Rajesh Agarwal, the chief medical superintendent of Kanpur’s Regency Hospital told reporters.
The doctor said the 30-year-old police officer was brought to the hospital in a very serious condition at about 6 am.
His pulse was very faint and had a very low blood pressure.
The officer was immediately put on life support system and is being treated for suspected poisoning.
The IPS officer, Surendra Kumar Das, 30, is the superintendent of police of East Kanpur district. He had joined the post less than a month back. It was his first posting that gave him independent charge of the district.
Surendra Kumar Das, who graduated in mechanical engineering, had joined the civil services about five years ago. He is a 2014 batch IPS officer.
Sanjiv Suman, the police chief of West Kanpur district, told reporters that no suicide note had been found yet.
“The staff at his camp office have said that he had been upset,” he said, adding that there had been some discord in the family.
A doctor at the hospital said the officer appeared to have consumed a pesticide.
