A 20-year-old Muslim woman survived a murder attempt when her brother allegedly shot at her for her affair with a Hindu man. The incident has once again highlighted the danger that honour killings still pose in the country.

A 20-year-old Muslim woman is battling for her life in a hospital after her brother shot her on Friday in the presence of their father because of her affair with a Hindu man, in Kamalpur Kafirpur village in Sambhal, about 100 km from Meerut.

The two men were sent to jail on Saturday following their arrest shortly after the shooting when the village watchman lodged a case of attempt to murder against them.

“The condition of the girl was critical and her father and brother have been taken into custody for interrogation,” deputy inspector general of police (DIG) of Moradabad range Omkar Singh told HT shortly before the duo was sent to jail.

The girl’s brother saw her while she was talking to her friend on Friday, and in fit of rage he allegedly shot her in presence of his father. The accused then made a futile attempt to dodge the police by concocting a story of loot in which miscreants had injured the girl.

But their lie was exposed when circle officer of Sambhal, Brahmpal Singh Baliyan reached the hospital where the injured girl narrated her horrifying story.

Parts of Uttar Pradesh have been on a tinder box over inter-religious marriage recently, particularly where the man happened to be Muslim.

In Nandrauli village of Sambhal district, Yadavs of the area vandalised over six Muslim households following the elopement of a girl from their community with a Muslim youth earlier this week.

And in Bulandshahr recently a middle-aged Muslim man was beaten to death after a distant relative of his eloped with a Hindu girl.
