The iconic Army Canteen at Kala Ghoda may have to shut down its shutter as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice to the owners on Thursday.

The restaurant has 24 hours to clear out of the 156-year-old Esplanade Mansion, which is dilapidated and dangerous structure according to the BMC.

The Army Canteen was recently revamped and is also called Sabalan – The Taste of Persia.

BMC has directed the owners of the eatery to stop trade activity until experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) submit a structural audit report of the entire mansion to the Bombay high court as part of an ongoing dispute between the owners and the tenants of the building.

If the restaurant owners fail to shut down the eatery within 24 hours, the BMC will seal it.

Built in 1863, Esplanade Mansion, a grade 2 A heritage structure, is the oldest-surviving cast iron building in India and was declared dilapidated and extremely dangerous by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority’s repair board in 2011.

Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of A ward (Fort, Nariman Point), said, “Visitors of the restaurant are not aware about the condition of the building. We can’t risk their lives. We’ve asked the owners to shut the place within 24 hours.”

Ali Mohommad Chaouspur, spokesperson of Army Canteen, said they are speaking to their lawyers to prepare a reply.

“In this building, there are 10 to 15 shops. The notice was sent to us alone. Other shops in the building have way more customers than us,” he said.
