Musicians Saurabh Shetye and Durgesh Khot are excited about composing music for Milind Ukey’s Marathi film Monsoon Football. The duo has composed music for films such as Maza Algaar (2017), Anaan (2017) and Pappu Ki Pugdandi (2015). The music composers, who started out as a band, is now breaking boundaries to create soulful music. They talk to us about their music.
Tell us about how you’ll got together?
Having performed together in a band for a couple of years, we realised we had similar music tastes and aspirations. So, we started this journey by making a few demo tracks. We were lucky enough that some really good people noticed us. Thanks to great music stalwarts, this beginning has culminated into we getting awards for the Best Upcoming Music Composers of the Year as well.
What are your practice or jam sessions like? Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Our practice sessions are very technical and to the point. Here, we start developing a melody around a set of chord progressions or a riff by keeping the movie theme and song situation in mind. Since, we arrange and produce most of our tracks, we get to bring out all the crazy musical ideas within us. We like to listen to a myriad of music genres ranging from pop, EDM and Hindustani, and follow artistes such as AR Rahman, Coldplay and Skrillex to name a few.
What is your take on the Marathi music industry? What changes are required in it?
Currently, the Marathi music industry is definitely the most booming one with a vast number of innovative movie subjects and concepts. We are glad to be in an era, where the Marathi film industry is flourishing in the state, the nation and globally. We love the new sound that is coming up, and would love to further it even more. The way the Marathi industry is growing, we don’t think it requires any changes.
Saurabh Shetye and Durgesh Khot will be out soon, starting off with ‘Toh phir kehna’ in three languages featuring Vijay Devarakonda and Malobika Banerjee ( HTPHOTO )
Tell us about the pulse of Monsoon Football?
Director Milind Ukey sat down with us to discuss the song. He gave us the background of the movie, and where the song would be placed. It is an anthem for the characters in the movie. His basic emphasis was that the song had to be energetic, yet soulful, as it is played and used at several crucial moments in the story. It had to have an expression of freedom, and strength as well. There’s also a victory chant in the song, which makes it end on a high note. We hope this song resonates in the hearts of all the fighters out there.
Performing live vs music composing, which has been more exciting?
We love doing both. But, each has its own merits. While singing live, we get to connect with our audience more closely, which we love. Whereas, while composing, we get to explore many sounds and musical ideas that come to our minds. In the near future, we plan to come up with a unique live show concept to entertain our fans.
What are your current and forthcoming projects?
We are definitely excited about Monsoon Football and can’t wait to see how it turns out. We also have a Bollywood and a Marathi project at a pre-production stage, and several amazing short films, which will be released soon. There’s also independent music, which will be out soon, starting off with ‘Toh phir kehna’ in three languages featuring Vijay Devarakonda and Malobika Banerjee.
