Thirteen die in 5 mishaps across Bihar in a day

Five people were killed and 11 others were injured when a speeding truck rammed into an overloaded auto rickshaw carrying at least 15 passengers on National Highway 31 near Rani Sarai village in rural Patna on Monday.

As many as 13 persons were killed and 21 others were injured in five separate mishaps across Bihar on Monday.

In the first incident, five people were killed and 11 others were injured when a speeding truck rammed into an overloaded auto rickshaw carrying at least 15 passengers on National Highway 31 near Rani Sarai village under Bakhtiyarpur police station area in rural Patna.

Traffic came to a halt at the busy Patna-Nalanda road for couple of hours following the accident.

Police said that the truck hit the auto-rickshaw after its driver lost control due to high speed killing five people on the spot. While four persons travelling in the vehicle were killed, the fifth deceased, Ram Babu Rai, was a biker, who was standing on the roadside when the truck after hitting the auto-rickshaw ran over him. The remaining 11 passengers were also seriously injured.

Police said those killed in the auto were employees of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) plant at Barh. The deceased have been identified as Sujit Pal (33), a native of Vishrampur police station area in Jharkhand`s Palamu district, Sanjay Kumar Singh (40), a native of Raghunathpur police station area in East Champaran district, Chitranjan Singh (38), a native of Bhagwanpur village under Tekari police station area in Gaya district and Shivshankar Singh (55), a native of Garhari village under Chenari police station area in Rohtas .

The injured were rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital after their preliminary treatment at a local hospital. The driver and cleaner of the truck managed to escape from the spot after the incident.

In another incident, three persons, including a minor, were killed and 10 others were injured when an auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling in collided head on with a truck on NH 28 near Mirzapur More under Barauli police station of Gopalganj district.

Soon after the incident, local people along with police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured passengers before shifting them to the sadar hospital.

Five of the injured persons were referred to Gorakhpur hospital for better treatment. Barauli SHO Rakesh Kumar Sharma said that police detained the truck driver and the cleaner. Those killed were identified as Rampati Devi, 50, Manju Devi, 60 and Sundari Kumari, 10.

TWO ELECTROCUTED

The Darbhanga district administration has ordered probe by a three-member panel after two persons died of electrocution in separate incidents in the district over the last 24 hours.

In the first case one Kundan Mukhia (25) was electrocuted when an 11KV live transmission line broke and fell on him. The incident had occurred when the victim was irrigating maize crop near his dwelling in Narayanpur village of Kusheshwar Asthan. His wife, Chunchun Devi, who was cutting grass on the farm, also sustained injuries while trying to save her husband. In the other incident, Thakni Devi (60) died on the spot in Paghari village under Baheri police station. The woman was electrocuted while making cattle dung cake after a high voltage electric cable snapped and fell down. Darbhanga district magistrate, M Thyagrajan SM, directed electricity department official to immediately change damaged electricity cables. According to electricity department executive engineer (rural), the department will pay a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. Irate villagers had staged road blockade in protest against the callous approach of electricity department that caused two precious lives.

TWO BOYS DROWN

At least two boys were feared drowned, while the third one was rescued, after the trio fell into Gandak River in East Champaran on Monday, police said.

The incident occurred when the three boys, identified as Raja Kumar (18), Sonu Kumar (19) and Vivek Kumar (18), had gone to collect water from the river at Puchhriya Ghat under Sangarampur police station area in Areraj subdivision of the district, about 195 km north of state capital Patna, as a part of yajna organised on the river bank. “The search and rescue operation is on,” said Mahendra Kumar officer-in-charge of Sangarampur police station. As the news spread, the locals swung into action and rescued Vivek Kumar, but Raja and Sonu could not be traced. All the victims belonged to Bintola near Sangarampur. The incident occurred at around 3pm. “Vivek Kumar has been admitted in a local hospital at Sangarampur. His condition is stated to be serious,” said a police official. Areraj sub divisional magistrate (SDM) said 12 expert divers were pressed into the search and rescue operation. “The victims have not been located as yet. The state disaster response Force (SDRF) has been called in for the operation,” the SDM said.

BIKER KILLED

A motorcyclist was killed in a head on collision with a speeding Scorpio at Bhawanipur Mangalapur under Sangrampur police station area of East Champaran. The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Kumar, resident of Uttari Bhawanipur, said the SHO of Sangrampur police station, adding that driver managed to flee after the accident. “The vehicle has been seized,” SHO added.
