“While we have been regularly appealing to the passengers to travel with a ticket, however, our instructions are often trivialised.”

Jhawar added, “During these drives, we impose a fine of 250, other than the ticket amount of the respective train journey. If any passenger refuse to pay the fine, he is liable to be arrested on the same grounds by the concerned officials, said Jhawar.

According to Jhawar, the drives were conducted at the Pune-Malavali, Pune-Baramati, Pune-Miraj and Miraj-Kolhapur sections of the central railways Pune division.  Starting from April 2018 to February 2019, the division has registered a total of 3,04,000 cases including the cases of passenger travelling without tickets, generating a total revenue of 14.70 crore.

This includes cases such as travelling with luggage over the permissible limits, and entering the railway station premises without the platform tickets.

Jhawar said, “According to the rules, a passenger in the first class air-conditioned compartment is allowed to carry a minimum luggage of 70 kilogrammes and a maximum of 150 kilogrammes, an AC two-tier passenger can carry a minimum of 50 kilogrammes of luggage and a maximum of 100 kilogrammes, a sleeper class and a second class passenger can carry minimum luggage of 40 kilogrammes and a maximum of 80 kilogrammes. If a passenger is travelling a 500-kilometre distance with 40 kg luggage in a sleeper class, he can book for the extra 40 kg luggage by paying 109 more

“However, if the passenger fails to do so and is caught with excess luggage, the passenger will end up paying a penalty that is six times the actual fee, so if the extra luggage costs 109 the fine will be 654.”
