22 regular teachers to ‘explain’ poor Class-10 PSEB results
In the dock: Teachers issued show-cause notices, to file reply within 21 days or face action
The director, public instructions (DPI, secondary), has issued show-cause notices to 22 regular teachers from the district for poor results of students in Class-10 Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) examination. The notices were issued on October 24.
This year, Ludhiana recorded the poorest results in the last five years with a pass percentage of 49% that has necessitated strict action by the education department. Of 41,599 students who appeared for the exam, only 20,367 passed.
Sources said 50 teachers in the state were asked to give an explanation for students recording less than 20% in their respective subjects. Teachers will face action if they fail to send a reply within the deadline.
For mathematics, 15 teachers got the notice, followed by three of social studies and two each of science and English. They have to file a reply, explaining the reason behind poor performance, to the district education officer (DEO, secondary) within 21 days.
Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Kaonke Kalan, and Government High School (GHS), Chhawani Mohalla, were the worst performers in the district. None of the students cleared their board examination, the results of which were announced in June.
At GSSS-Kaonke Kalan, 61 students appeared for the mathematics exam. Of them, 51 students failed the exam and the remaining 10 received a compartment. In other subjects such as Punjabi and social sciences, the schools’ result is below 20%.
However, many teachers said they were overburdened with additional duties when their job was to focus on the students. A majority of them also said they were on election duty before the examination.
Paramjit Singh, DPI (secondary) said, “If we don’t get a satisfactory reply from the teachers, then we will take disciplinary action against them. The teachers have 21 days to reply.”
On July 27, director general, school education, Punjab, Prashant Kumar Goyal also issued a show-cause notice to 10 contract teachers for the poor performance of students in Class-10 PSEB examination.
